The Founder

Alix Soubiran is a French artist based in Los Angeles, California. Born, raised and educated in Paris, she moved to Los Angeles in 2008 where she developed her career designing wallpaper and painting murals for high-end interior design projects.

In 2017, she started experimenting with clay and became a self-taught ceramic artist. Her hand-sculpted ceramics are an expression of her love for traditional craftsmanship and French history and are always hand-painted, one-of-a-kind, and made in Los Angeles.

Process

Alix uses black clay and white and blue glazes for most of her pieces. Her process usually involves three firings instead of two. Alix doesn't use a pottery wheel; her process is more akin to sculpture. Each piece is hand built which shows the hand of the artist, creating those "perfect imperfections" that give an object a unique personnality.

Style

Alix Soubiran's portraits, fabric designs and ceramics are alike imbued with the decorative style of the 17th and 18th centuries which she has been studying for many years. And through all these medium, she is creating a style that is elegant, yet rustic with a historic patina.

"[Alix Soubiran's] ...Hand sculpted ceramics lean as pastoral as they do patriotic"

Textile Collection

This is Alix Soubiran's first textile collection. She originally created this line to make lamp shades for her own ceramic lamp bases. It is based on historic archives that she reworked, recolored, pieced with new patterns, in a sophisticated collage sort of way. The result is reminiscent of the upholstery that could have been found in the rooms of a small castle in the French countryside.
